Quality, Style and Great Design: Taylor Made Designs

Quality, style and great design; all synonymous with the superyacht image. Crew uniform plays a vital part in conveying a message, so how difficult is it to get right?

Not difficult at all in fact, if you know the right man. Meet Ed Taylor of Taylor Made Designs!

TMD started out in 1993 branding uniform. Today they are a multinational uniform company sourcing garments from across the world as a single source provider. TMD know the marine sector well and has grown considerably over the past seven years working with numerous refits and new build projects. Ed and his team understand just how hardworking and multi-functional crew uniform needs to be.

Often called in at the beginning of a build or re-fit, TMD consults with design teams, going over plans, design, colour palettes and style to understand the character of the yacht and present a uniform that reflects this. Superyachts tend to opt for a neutral colour scheme for uniform, allowing the crew to blend with their surroundings and offer a discreet service. However, with the number of beautiful fabrics available and bespoke branding there is still scope to be different and keep your uniform on-point.

With a brief in place TMD research and source garments from hundreds of different suppliers, fabric choice, availability within the range of colours and sizes, quality and functionality. The tech behind fabric has never been better. A uniform needs to go all day without showing signs of wear or staining and be comfortable and breathable for the crew even in the warmest of climes. It also needs to be fit for purpose so many items can be sourced from easily accessible, sustainable brands.

TMD also store uniform for their more spatially challenged clients. A superyacht crew can have three or four changes of uniform a day, across all departments. From day to eveningwear to shorts and polo shirt to smart trousers and a shirt or dress. TMD also source personal protection wear for maintenance and cleaning crew members.

“It’s up to us to educate our clients about the best, most suitable garments available and to make sure those garments are future proof, that they will be available for re-order. We often store additional stock in our warehouse so clients can top up easily. This goes for more complex, bespoke items as well. Ultimately we’re trying to make the whole process of uniform management as stress-free and seamless as possible.”

Over the past six years, TMD has formed solid relationships with their clients by offering a more bespoke, personal, consultative service.

“We’re very relationship driven. We have fantastic relationships with our clients. Aside from this, it really is a uniform management process and our clients know that if they need anything we will get it done!”
