Prioritising Mental Health During the Busy Med Season

Mental Health Awareness Week is a good reminder that while the Mediterranean summer season can be one of the most exciting parts of yachting, it can also be one of the most demanding.

As the Mediterranean summer season approaches, yacht crew are preparing for long days, busy charters, high standards, and very little downtime. While the season brings unforgettable experiences and incredible opportunities, it can also take a real toll mentally and physically if you are not careful.

In yachting, it is easy to focus entirely on performance and forget how important it is to look after your wellbeing along the way. Maintaining good mental health is just as important as staying physically fit during a busy season, and often the two go hand in hand.

A few small habits can make a big difference onboard:

Prioritise rest when you can
Busy schedules and late nights are often unavoidable, but proper rest is essential for staying focused, patient, and resilient throughout the season.

Keep active
Physical health can have a huge impact on mental wellbeing. Use the onboard crew gym if you have one, go for a run whether solo or with other crew members, hike during days off, practice yoga, or even fit in short cabin workouts. Small amounts of movement can help reduce stress, improve mood, and give you a mental reset during demanding periods.

Stay connected to people outside the industry
Checking in with family and friends regularly can help create balance and provide support during more stressful periods onboard.

Take time to reset
Whether it is exercise, getting some fresh air, listening to music, or simply having a quiet coffee alone before the day starts, small moments away from work mode can help mentally recharge.

Recognise burnout early
Feeling constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, irritable, or unmotivated are often signs that stress is building up. Speaking to someone early can prevent things from escalating further.

Support your crew
The onboard environment has a huge impact on wellbeing during the season. Good communication, patience, and looking out for one another can make life onboard far more manageable for everyone.

Yachting is demanding, and busy seasons will always be intense, but looking after your mental and physical health is part of being able to do the job well long term.

A good season is not just about guest trips and busy charters, it is also about getting through it without completely running yourself into the ground.
