Courses For Shoreside Roles

For numerous yacht crew members, transitioning to a shoreside career can be intimidating as they contemplate the timing and process of taking the next step. However, there is encouraging news: employers on this side of the industry highly value the extensive knowledge and experience acquired by ex-yachties and I have personally witnessed an increase in demand for ex-yacht crew from companies seeking individuals familiar with superyacht operations, the maritime industry, and the ability to work with clients in private residences and businesses.

When applying for shoreside positions, it is crucial to carefully consider the skills and experience that can be transferred from previous roles. It’s best not to assume that employers will fully comprehend the nature of duties on board. Clearly and succinctly presenting these key attributes, skills, and experiences on their CV can significantly enhance chances of standing out to potential employers. With transferable skills that can be applied in various roles, it may not always be necessary to undergo retraining. However, ex-yachties and even individuals already engaged in a shoreside position may also contemplate pursuing additional courses to progress in their careers.

Maritime Training Academy (MTA) specialises in providing expert training to marine professionals. In recent years, their training portfolio has expanded across multiple sectors of the maritime industry, encompassing superyachts, shipping, and marine surveying. They offer a selection of diploma and certificate courses suitable for shoreside roles, including Superyacht Management, Superyacht Project Management, Refit & Newbuilding, Superyacht Surveying, Yacht Brokerage, as well as courses in Marine Insurance Claims and Maritime Law. These courses can be conveniently completed through distance learning, with diploma students required to pass written examinations after finishing their assignments.

MTA’s courses can prove particularly valuable for those aspiring to work in specific areas of the maritime industry or aiming to enhance their knowledge and responsibilities within certain roles. They are also beneficial for individuals who collaborate with particular aspects of the industry and require a solid working understanding, such as Maritime Law. While having a working knowledge of the industry is advantageous for all courses, it is not a prerequisite.

While pursuing additional courses can equip them with specialised knowledge and open up career opportunities, it is important to note that diplomas and short courses do not always guarantee employment in their desired field. Many companies still prioritise hands-on experience in these areas.

This is where we can advise and offer our expertise before committing to further education to ensure it aligns with the candidate’s goals, potential employer’s expectations, and future career prospects.
